Oklahoma City, OK - (June 16, 2016) – Monica Abbott tossed a gem Thursday afternoon in the sweltering heat to pick up her second win of the season over the Dallas Charge. She went six innings giving up just two hits while striking out 11 and walking two. The Scrap Yard Dawgs beat the Charge in their first ever meeting in NPF history 7-2.
The Scrap Yard Dawgs scored had base runners in every inning. Charge starting pitcher Morgan Melloh, in her first start of the season, went five innings. She allowed seven runs on seven hits. The lefty also walked seven and hit three batters, Christian Stokes, twice.
The Charged managed just three hits in the contest. Left fielder Kylee Lahners was a bright spot, hitting a solo home run, her fourth of the season, over the right centerfield fence in the bottom of the fourth.
The Dawgs opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second off the bat of Stokes. In the following frame the Dawgs put up a four spot on four hits including a Stokes two-run blast, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Lahners fourh inning homer closed the gap to 5-1. In the top of the sixth Christi Orgeron notched a pinch hit two-run homer to left, her first hit of the season. That stretched the lead to 7-1 and spelled the end of Melloh’s day. Rookie Jill Compton came in to get the final six outs, throwing two scoreless innings.
Ivy Renfroe relieved Abbott in the final inning. The Charge managed one run in the at bat on the strength of doubles by Nadia Taylor and Chelsea Forkin.
The Charge dropped to 4-6. The Dawgs moved to 4-7. Both teams head to McKinney for exhibition games against Team USA on Friday, before resuming their series in The Woodlands on Saturday.
