Dallas TX – March 4, 2015 — The Dallas Charge are pleased to announce the signing of Mikey Kenney, one of the most prolific hitters in Texas Tech softball history. The Arvada, Colorado native left Texas Tech as the all-time homerun, RBI, and runs leader. Kenney brings a powerful, right-handed bat to the lineup and strong defensive presence in the outfield.
“We’re really excited about the depth Mikey Kenney can add to our lineup. For those familiar with the Big 12, they’ll remember the big bat Kenney brought at the top of Tech’s lineup. She’s a power hitter who can also hit for average and she’s an experienced outfielder who isn’t afraid to compete,” said Charge General Manager Kevin Shelton.
Kinney rewrote the record books for the Red Raiders. Upon her graduation in 2013, Kenney shattered the career records at Tech for runs scored (194), home runs (43), and RBIs. Kenney also ranks second in career hits. She became one of only five Red Raiders to have been named All-Big 12 for three seasons. Additionally, she was named to the NFCA All-Region team in her sophomore season.
“I am looking forward to playing against the best players in the country on a regular basis. Nothing is more exciting than playing a sport you love and being able to compete with and against the best. I am really excited to get back out on the field and playing again,” said Kenney.
The former centerfielder arrived in Texas in 2010 and has continued to make an impact on the diamond. Kenney, who was a member of the winningest class in Texas Tech softball history, hopes to continue her impact on the Lone Star state in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF).
“Having the opportunity to play for a brand new team is awesome because we have the chance to create something great in the state of Texas and can help continue to grow the sport. I think it’s great we have so many players from Texas that will be able to connect the team to the community,” said Kenney.
Kenney joins Natalie Villarreal (Texas A&M) and Taylor Thom (University of Texas) as Charge players who hail from Texas universities. Recent signee Molly Fichtner, a Houston native, also played her first two seasons at UTSA before transferring to Alabama.
Currently, Kenney is a graduate assistant in the Texas Tech athletic program while working on a Masters degree in Sport Management. Kenney said she is excited to return to the diamond and connect with the fan base in North Texas.
