The Dallas Charge of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league are pleased to announce the signing of former University of Louisiana Lafayette (ULL) standout Brianna Cherry. After playing last season with the Akron Racers, Cherry was signed after attending the Charge’s first annual tryout in May.
“I’m looking forward to redefining myself as an athlete. I feel like I have been blessed with a second chance to do something I love and be successful. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a professional athlete and I am so honored to have been chosen to represent the Dallas Charge,” said Cherry.
The Akron Racers selected Cherry with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) draft after an All American campaign her senior season. After sitting out the 2013 season, she signed with the Racers for the 2014 year. The righty power hitter appeared in 33 games for the Racers and had 17 hits, 11 runs scored, 6 RBIs and a homerun.
“We couldn’t be more pleased about adding Brianna to the roster. She is one of the most impressive looking athletes I’ve seen and has a solid track record. She really stood out at the tryout where there was a bevy of other D1 players. Brianna is in her 2nd year in the league, which helps add some valuable experience to our squad. She is imposing, strong and showed up in tremendous shape. We look forward to seeing her excel in a Charge uniform.,” said Charge General Manager Kevin Shelton
The former Rajin Cajun had a stellar senior season that included being named a NFCA Second Team All-American. Cherry lead the Sun Belt conference in hits, runs, and triples in 2013 and was named First Team All-Sun Belt. Overall, she hit .393 with 55 RBIs, 14 homeruns, and 65 runs scored.
The Patel, Mississippi native is another athlete who provides the Charge versatility on defense. Her overall athleticism and power was something that stood out in the tryout and will continue to add depth to our roster.
“Going into the tryout, I wanted to make sure I was prepared and ready for whatever challenges that would be presented to me. I had one goal in mind and that was to give everything I had and have no regrets at the end,” said Cherry about her approach in the tryout.
Currently, Cherry is a 7th grade English teacher and helps coach the Barbe High School softball team and 12U summer team. She will join other Charge players at the end of the month to begin preparing for the 2015 NPF season which kicks off June 3rd at home against the Pennsylvania Rebellion.
